Trenton Downtown Association Is Bringing Artists, Residents and Businesses Together for a Day of Artmaking and Joy
TRENTON, NJ, September 30, 2020-Trenton Downtown Association (TDA) has enlisted the help of more than a dozen artists to share their talents, enthusiasm and community spirit for one day of sidewalk chalk artmaking.
The Sidewalk Chalk Project will be happening all around Trenton on Sunday, October 4th, as artists, residents, business owners and other friends of the community come together to create artwork in driveways and on front doors, windows, stoops and porches-any surface that serves as a "canvas" for public art.
"Sidewalk chalk is an activity that anyone can do, no matter what their level of artistic ability, and it's fun. It brings people together in a shared creative, community-building experience," explains Meaghan Singletary, Development Manager at TDA.
The concept behind the project was to brighten neighborhoods all around Trenton. "It's a way to show love for the spaces that have become everything to many of us: our homes, our workspaces and our schools," she explains.
On the day of the event, artists and community members will create artwork on designated sidewalks and driveways. They will be joined by anyone who wants to participate, by creating artwork in their own spaces. Throughout the day, everyone will be encouraged to post and share their photos and videos on social media.
"The goal is to bring some fun and joy into our lives," explains Singletary. "We created the hashtag #ChalkTrenton so that everyone can follow along or share their own masterpieces on social media."
TDA will be supplying some art supplies on a first-come, first-served basis at designated drop points. Anyone interested in participating is welcome to join. Those interested in hosting a chalk drop point can send an email to TDA at [email protected].
"We are grateful for the funding we received from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, NJM Insurance and the Levitt Foundation to make this happen. As a result, TDA will be able to provide some art supplies on a limited basis," says Singletary.
