The iconic vision of Washington crossing the Delaware in 1776 is etched into the mindsof Americans. What may not be as well-known is how Washington’s subsequent victory in Trenton reversed our fledgling nation’s sure defeat and changed the course o fhistory. Now, 246 years later, “Liberty Weekend” – July 8, 9 and 10, 2022 -- will tell thestory and celebrate a new Trenton’s central role in American history.
Visit www.kiwanisoftrentonnj.org for a full calendar of events, starting with a reenactment of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence outside of Philadelphia on Friday, July 8, 2022 at noon. Trentonians will gather exactly 246 years –to the hour – after the reading at the spot on Warren Street where the world outside ofPhiladelphia first heard the revolutionary words of the Declaration.
On Saturday, July 9, 2022 start your day at 10 a.m. at the Trenton Battle Monument fora flag raising at the site of Washington’s improbable victory over Hessian mercenariesthe day after Christmas in 1776. At 2 pm learn about the first historian to tell the story ofthe pivotal battle at the Trent House. Visit the Barracks, State House and other sites,enjoy great food at Trenton’s diverse eateries, then head over to Trenton’s historic Cadwalader Park for a free performance by the 73 member Capital Philharmonic at 7 pm. Set amongst the rolling landscape envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted – thedesigner of Central Park in New York City – the orchestra will perform a program offavorites under the direction of maestro Daniel Spalding, (Seewww.capitalphilharomonic.org ).
